Discover
Launceston Distillery is built on a story of heritage, craft and place. From our beginnings to our home at Hangar 17, discover what makes our Tasmanian single malt whisky unique.
Our Beginning
A Dream Realised
Launceston Distillery began as the vision of five friends with a shared passion for whisky. Inspired by the Scottish single malt tradition, they set out to create a distillery that would reflect the purity and character of Tasmania.
Founded in 2013, production began in 2015, with a focus on authenticity and craftsmanship. Every decision since has been guided by a simple principle: create the finest Tasmanian single malt possible.

Our Home β Hangar 17
A Dream Realised
Our distillery is located in historic Hangar 17 at Launceston Airport β Tasmaniaβs oldest surviving aviation building. Constructed in 1932, it was the stateβs main passenger terminal until 1968.
Since 2013, we have preserved and adapted this remarkable space into a working distillery. Today, it is home to our stills, casks and bottling β a place where tradition and innovation sit side by side.
The Legacy β Caledonian Distillery
Reviving Launcestonβs Whisky Heritage
Launcestonβs first whisky distillery, the Caledonian Distillery, was established in 1824 and became one of the colonyβs foremost distilleries. In 1839, the Distillation Prohibition Act was enacted, outlawing the distilling of spirits across the island. Since 1992, when the law was changed to allow modern-day distilleries, Tasmania has been home to a growing number of producers. Launceston Distillery is the first traditional whisky producer in Launceston to gain a production licence since the Caledonian closed.
Associations
Proud Members of Tasmaniaβs Whisky and Business Communities
Launceston Distillery is proud to be a member of both the Tasmanian Whisky & Spirits Association, supporting excellence and collaboration across the islandβs distilling industry, and the Northern Midlands Business Association Inc., working together to strengthen our local community and regional economy.
